Malcolm is edgy and foulmouthed so he unwinds by sleeping, playing records, and doing drugs such as cocaine and marijuana. He is seeing Sophia in his free time behind her husbands back. With Rudy, a local black man, and Shorty they plan a burglary ring in a white neighborhood and use Sophia and her sister to keep a watch out for anything suspicious. Malcolm gets arrested for "stealing" something from a local pawn shop and while being interrogated, he is only asked questions about his relationship with Sophia instead of being questioned about his crime of burglary. He is then sentenced to 10 years in state prison.
